About This Project

The design of this home was prepared for Jonathan’s sister-in-law for a coastal site in Mandurrah, about an hour’s drive south of Perth in Western Australia.

With sweeping views out over a reserve to the Indian Ocean beyond, this house is all about making the most of the amazing views. This is however complicated in such a hot climate where as much direct sun as possible is excluded from the interior. This approach is quite different to what we are used to in New Zealand but informed the design to result in wide, low eaves to the west and high-level glazing to the east.

The efforts made to exclude direct sun has created a home which sits contentedly on its site,  enjoys great views, while achieving a comfortable internal environment without the need for air-conditioning which is somewhat an anomaly in the heat of Western Australia.
